Does does Troy's childhood, make Troy want to neglect Cory because his Dad neglected him?
ReplyDeleteGood question. I don't think this makes him want to, but his dad treating him like this makes Troy think this behavior is normal.
DeleteYes, since he was neglected growing up, he never learned to show the ones closest to him how much he cared. I believe that though his actions were quite possessive and selfish, his intentions were to be selfless. But considering the conditions and the only influence he received from his dad, he has shown that he found a way to make somewhat of a man out of himself the way his father couldn't.
DeleteI agree with Ethan, I think the most disturbing part of the text is when Troy realizes why his Dad is running him off.
ReplyDeleteWas Troy's parenting a mirror image of his fathers with the idea of pushing the child quickly to adulthood?
ReplyDeleteI think yes and no. I do think that Troy did end up pushing Cory into the adult world quickly, but I don't think he really meant to. Before the argument with Cory, Rose had lost all trust in Troy, and hadn't seen Bono in a while. His life was shaken up so I think that he was already irritated and therefore took his anger out on Cory and pushed him out into the adult world quickly. Had things not have gone poorly with Rose and Bono, I think his mood would have been different and he wouldn't have thrown Cory out.
DeleteWhy would Troy feel the need to act like his own Dad around Cory when he could have gave Cory everything his father didn't?
ReplyDeleteThis was what I was wondering too. In a sense, depending on the person Troy may think that since he was raised similarly to how he parents Cory. He may think that this is a proper way to help evolve a person.
Deletei think troy thinks of himself as a better father, because he's trying to protect cory from the heartbreak of not being able to follow his dreams. i agree though, i think troy is not a good father and isn't loving, just like his own father
DeleteI think that Troy is being too overprotective because he doesn't want Corey to experience the disappointment he did in life.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Cam, I think that Troy drinks a lot to try and forget his past because it was very difficult. I also think his past relationship with his father correlates to how he treats his own children.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this. Along with Sienna's thought. I think that whatever happens when you are a child and when you are developing as a human being, you learn what you see and what happens in your life, and if you're not told from what's right and what's wrong, that's how you grow up.
DeleteTroy says, "... the only thing that separated us was the matter of a few years". Do you think that Troy thinks of himself of just as bad of a father to Cory as his father was to him?
ReplyDeleteI think that Troy loved his son, but not in the traditional way that you wouldn't usually expect. Troy would care if his son died, but he doesn't really mind what Cory does otherwise, unless it succeeds Troy's greatness.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the last point here in that Troy doesn't care what Cory does with his life, as long as he doesn't become "better" than his Dad in any way. This is a bad way to raise a kid because preventing him from living a free life will poorly affect Cory's future.
DeleteWhat Sienna said was interesting, "Sometimes when he touched he bruised." I imagine that can be frustrating for Troy because even when he tries to be kind or gentle, it hurt people so he might give up being soft.
ReplyDeleteRoes says, "But that what life offered me in the way of being a woman and I took it, I grabbed hold of it with both hands."
ReplyDeleteWhat do you think she meant by this?
I think what Rose is trying to say is since she fell in love with Troy she does not want to let him go. Since Troy was a person that was very disrespectful. Rose had to be a women inorder for her to be happy.
DeleteWhy do you guys think Rose's loyalty to Troy was everlasting? Even after Troys death she still held on and stayed true to Raynell, do you think it was because she truly loved him, or she just felt like she had nothing else? Because multiple times in the play she says how she gave her life to him and its been 15 years which shows that she must feel like she got trapped a long time ago.
ReplyDeleteI feel like this monologue shows Rose's true emotions which she has been holding onto. She has always dealt with the continuous mistakes and flaws of Troy without any complaint, mainly due to her blaming herself for the harmful actions of others. Rose's kind and sincere personality would not allow her to share any upset she had with her husband, until it becomes too much to bear.
ReplyDeleteThe change I noticed was when Rose is describing Troy with all the juxtaposing things like "sometimes when he touched, he bruised" and then she starts to talk about how she gave up a lot of her life to help Troy.
