Any Heroes Here? April 9, 2018

Focus: Is there any potential for heroism in The Great Gatsby?

1. Warming up with Grammar You Must Know #10: Transitions

2. Trying out the hero's journey in The Great Gatsby on Nick and Gatsby
  • Quickly recap the different stages of the hero's journey. Look up anything you feel confused about; try this website or this one if you need a quick refresher.
  • Try filling out the hero's journey so far for Nick.
  • Try filling out the hero's journey so far for Gatsby.
  • Draw larger conclusions: Is one character a more convincing hero than the other? Are they both heroes? Why? Is neither a hero? Why not? What might Fitzgerald want us to understand better or differently about the role of heroes in a Modern world? FORM A THESIS STATEMENT IN RESPONSE TO THIS AND POST IT ON OUR CLASS BLOG.
3. Taking time to read and journal on Chapter 7 (leaders may use this time to meet)

HW:
Read at least the first half of Chapter 7 by tomorrow; start your blog entry. You need to read all of Chapter 7 by Thursday and complete your blog entry (just one for the whole chapter). It's LOOOOOOOOOOOOONGG, so start tonight.

  1. Gatsby is a superior hero to Nick because of the influence he has on others and the way he follows the hero's journey.

  2. Gatsby can be seen to be on the hero's journey because he was a very poor boy and his threshold was meeting that man who he went fishing with.

  3. Neither Gatsby or Nick fir the role of a hero very well, Nick is more of a side charecter in his own story and Gatsby doesnt fit the hero's journey all the way through.

  4. I believe that Gatsby and Nick are both heroes for each other because Nick needs Gatsby for the social aspect of his life and Gatsby needs Nick to get closer to his true love.

  5. Gatsby is a bigger hero in this story because the story line is about him, the plot would not exist without him, and Nick looks up to him. The story is from Nick's perspective but every event revolves around Gatsby's actions.

  6. Neither of the characters are hero's becuase of their odd jounreys. We don't really know what Nicks call to action is and with Gatsby, it's hard to understand where he came from and what he wants besides Daisy

  7. i think gatsby is not a hero, he does everything just for his benefit and not in order to help anyone else. he throws parties in order to get back with a girl he likes, and it seems like he becomes friends with nick in order to get back with a girl he likes

  8. Gatsby is a more convincing hero because of his relation to the heroes' journey: He spent much of his time in the book in the known side of the map, then once he started to pressure Nick to get Daisy in for tea, he entered the unknown.

  9. Gatsby and Nick are both people that aspire to be heroes, although they are facing many challenges along the way. Gatsby wants to be a hero and get Daisy to be his, but he is almost reverting in his journey, then going forward. Nick is slowly making his way through his journey, and I don't think he really knows that he is on one.

  10. Gatsby and Nick, don't every follow the hero's journey path. Gatsby is the only one trying to achieve this goal, but we don't see his path because the book in narrated by Nick

  11. Although neither of these characters perfectly follow the Hero's Journey, Nick seems to represent a more heroic character based on the journey he has experienced in New York, and how it has changed him as a man.

  12. Neither Nick or Gatsby are heroes because Gatsby looks only to his own interests and does not follow the Hero's Journey because he is stuck in the past. Nick is not a hero because he never has a call to action and does not cross the threshold of the unknown.

  13. Fitzgerald is trying to communicate that wealth doesn't complete the hero's journey. Even though Gatsby is wealthy, he's still going through the journey.

  14. Even though Nick views the world from an outsiders perspective, he fits within a hero because Gatsby's invitation is Nick's call to adventure, there is a clear beginning of transformation for Nick as he attends the parties and he is challenged to make odd/unique decisions.

  15. Nick is a silent hero because he may not be rescuing a cat from a tree but he has crossed the threshold going into either of the egg’s world and he is enlightening those people with his wisdom but also gaining experience on a whole new life.

  16. Gatsby is a hero considering the American Dream because he was able to come from a low of being poor to becoming a strong, wealthy guy who is able to stand on his own.

  17. Neither Gatsby nor Nick is the hero. Nick is more of a people helper than a person who is taking the journey. And Gatsby to me seems like he is trying to go back to fix his journey. Then trying to find a way to move on from the past.
